Abstract:

These days it seems like the labels for every content container are in constant flux. Book, ebook, interactive ebook, app… the list goes on! Truth is, our whole concept of what is and what isn’t a content container changes every time we encounter the latest new technology wave. We have more choices than sink or swim, though!

Enter HTML5, to the rescue... But does HTML5 have staying power? And if so, what does it mean to how you produce and distribute your content, whether it’s a book, ebook, interactive ebook, app, or maybe all of the above? This tutorial will help you sort through the confusing clutter of information, blogger speculation, media predictions, and IT analysis with a clear, realistic discussion of HTML5 and its implications for anyone who publishes content – whether it’s service content, technical content, or the great American novel.

By the end of this workshop, attendees have a clear understanding of the following questions:

What exactly is HTML5?
Why you care about HTML5?
What can you do with content in HTML5?
Where can you find examples of HTML5 already in use? (Hint, HTML5 it’s in more places than you may think)

Can you afford not to adopt HTML5?

The workshop will also include feature and functional demos of several live HTML5 applications in the wild.

About the presenter

Jean Kaplansky first started in the world of XML way back in 1995. In her current role with Aptara, she advises on all things digital content. She also provides technical verification, and insight into business development customer conversations, focused on proposing solutions for, and developing customer publishing production strategies. When she's not working directly with customers and internal teams, I also contribute to Aptara's marketing and social media projects.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan (Go Wolverines), and a CompTIA CDIA certification. She lives and works amongst a menagerie of cats, dogs, and musicians in the New York Adirondack Region.

Jean has a great sense of humor and it is easy to see that she is not only very knowledgeable in the field, but that she has a passion for what she does. She is the type of person who likes to tinker under the hood and push the barriers. She lives out on the bleeding edge of the XML world.
